"You can't want sex again. We just went to sleep, Meer," I groaned, feeling him gently nudging me.
I made a mental note to check his side of the sink for Viagra. There was no way he wanted round two so soon—not even a few hours after we'd finished.
"Sug, somebody trying to get into the crib… shit's tripping the system." I watched him climb out of bed, pull on a hoodie, grab his gun from the nightstand, and check his phone. "They got the fuck in."
I jumped up, grabbing a pair of his sweats from the chair near the bed. I checked the baby monitors, then grabbed my own gun. "I'm going to get the girls."
Meer had gone into his head. In that moment, he wasn't my husband or the father of our girls. He was a protector, and someone had invaded our safe place, daring to step foot in our home.
His phone buzzed in his hand. He turned the screen to show me it was Quasim calling. "Suga, the girls are priority… I'm getting you to the side of the house so you can make it to the compound… I'll be behind you."
I started to argue, but he gave me *that* look. "You heard what the fuck I said."
I checked my gun and grabbed an extra clip from the side table. We crept out of the bedroom, down the hall to where Peach and Cherry's rooms were. My baby had just started sleeping in her own room, and now this shit happened.
While Meer went to get Cherry, I rushed into Peach's room, grabbing some clothes she could put on in the car. "Peach, baby." I held a finger to my lips when she stirred.
"Why we whispering, Suga mama?"
I hated this.
I hated having to look my baby in the eyes and tell her someone was in our home, wanting to harm us. Meer and I had started telling her that we carried guns for her protection. Meer stressed that he wanted the girls to always know what was up, never to be defenseless when it came to the life we lived.
Their uncle was King Inferno, and that came with a lot of jealousy—people wanting to cause harm to us. "Someone is in the house, baby… we need to get out. I need you to listen to me and do what I say, okay?"
Peach nodded and pulled the covers off her body. I slipped her slippers on, grabbed her hand, shoved her clothes into a bag, and slung it across my body. We crept out of the room just as Meer came out of Cherry's.
Gunshots erupted behind us.
We ducked as bullets sparked against the wall. I could feel Peach shaking while holding my hand. I released her grip, cocked my gun, and aimed at the nigga in the ski mask trying to shoot us. I caught him in the shoulder right as Meer handed me Cherry. Then he opened fire on the man, finishing him off.
"Back staircase," he directed.
We made for the back staircase that led past the garage and the back door. My car was parked outside the garage. Meer grabbed the keys from the hook, making sure the girls and I were behind him as he opened the door. The alarm sounded, causing Cherry to jump in my arms and start crying.
I kissed her head, holding her close while keeping my gun ready. Peach held onto my arm. "It's alright, baby… Mama gonna make sure my girls are good."
He nodded for me to follow. Whoever came was still inside the house. Meer held the door open for Peach and got her in, kissing her forehead and staring into her eyes. He put Cherry in my arms because we didn't have time for the car seat.
"Suga, get the fuck away from here… I'm behind you."
"Meer."
"Capri."
I hated leaving him behind.
"Daddy."
"I'm coming for you, Peach… hold your sister tight for me, okay?"
"Okay," she cried, watching him head back into the house.
I got into the car and quickly pulled away, knowing I was leaving my husband behind.
